How to follow tonight’s results
Polls close at 8 p.m. but mail-in ballots could delay final tallies.
Let’s be clear about today’s election. With 1.4 million mail-in ballots requested, including nearly 75,000 in Lehigh and Northampton counties, the final results in many races may not be known tonight.
Lehigh County, for example, is hoping to have most if not all of the unofficial results ready by Wednesday morning, according to Tim Benyo, the county’s chief election official.
Northampton County hopes to have all unofficial results finished by midnight on Election Day, said Becky Bartlett, the county’s deputy director of administration/public information officer.
That doesn’t mean you can’t follow the results as they are posted live by counties and the state.
If you are following county election websites, depending on the race, you will have to look at several county results to get a clear picture as many seats cross county boundaries.
For example, the 7th Congressional District, where incumbent Democrat Susan Wild is facing Republican Lisa Scheller, spans all of Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties and parts of Monroe county.
When watching results, bear in mind that Democrats requested three times the number of mail in ballots as Republicans, so early numbers might not reflect where the race is headed. This was the case in the May primary. In addition, military ballots are not due until Nov. 15
Results also might differ from county and state websites due to the timing on when results are updated.
