Workshop planned for would-be candidates
Jan. 21 event is sponsored by League of Women Voters Lehigh County
Have you ever thought about running for office, but are unsure about how to go about it?
The League of Women Voters Lehigh County will host its biennial Running for Local Office Workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Jan. 21 at Penn State Lehigh Valley, 2809 Saucon Valley Road, Center Valley.
2023 is a municipal election year where voters will be electing judges, county row officers, mayors, council members, supervisors, school board members and more.
Already, at least two candidates have announced their plans for running in the primary. Republican Joseph Hanna, 66, of Lower Macungie is seeking reelection as sheriff in Lehigh County.
Democrat Daniel Buglio, 49 of South Whitehall is running for Lehigh County coroner, a post he was appointed to in April after Eric Minnich resigned.
The League of Women Voters workshop is geared toward people who want to learn the ins and outs of running for office.
The keynote speaker is State Rep. Malcom Kenyatta, a Philadelphia Democrat who was recently reelected in the 181st and ran unsuccessfully in the May primary for U.S. Senate.
Other topics include:
Running a Successful Campaign, featuring Republicans Tori Morgan, a former South Whitehall commissioner and South Whitehall chair, and Brad Osborne, a South Whitehall commissioner and former Lehigh County commissioner; and Democrats State Rep. Peter Schweyer (134th) a former Allentown City Council president, and Marisa Ziegler, a Parkland School Board member.
Working with the Press, featuring Morning Call columnist Bill White.
Working with Your Political Party, featuring Lori McFarland, chair of the Lehigh County Democratic Committee, and a TBD for the Republican Party.
The Paperwork, featuring Tim Benyo, chief clerk of Lehigh County Registration and Elections.
The cost is $40 and includes a continental breakfast, coffee bar and extensive handbook on running for office in 2023.
